General Information
SCHOOL HOURS
Morning Session 9.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m.
Afternoon Session 1.45 p.m. - 3.15 p.m.
If, for any reason, a variation of these times is necessary, written notification will be sent home. Please do not act on hearsay or verbal messages from your child.
SUPERVISION
Please note that the official times of school ground supervision are between 8.45 a.m. - 3.45 p.m. No responsibility can be taken for children who are in the school ground outside of these hours. Bus travellers will be supervised by a duty teacher.
ABSENCES
When your child returns to school after an absence, you are required to supply your child's teacher with a note giving reasons for the absence. Please contact the school if your child is attending the morning session of school but is not returning for the afternoon session.
BUS TRAVELLERS
It is most important that teachers are aware of any variation in your child's travel arrangements. The teachers are rostered for duty after school to see that every child is on the correct bus. Unless we are notified in writing (or by telephone in an emergency) we will make sure every child is put on his/her correct bus.
BICYCLES
Victorian law stipulates that all cyclists must wear helmets. Also, please ensure that your child knows and uses the correct procedures and road rules when riding on roads, especially on and near the main highway. Bikes are also not permitted to be ridden within the confines of the school ground, and must be placed in the bike racks during the day. We do not encourage children below 8 years of age to ride bikes to school, without adult supervision.
SCHOOL BANK
Children may open savings accounts with the Commonwealth Bank through the school. This gives children an opportunity to develop the habit of saving small amounts of money on a regular basis. Forms for opening accounts are obtainable from the school or the bank. Bank Day is Tuesday. Money and pay-in slip are enclosed in a wallet with the bank book. Banking is done at the school and bank books are returned immediately.
SWIMMING
As part of the educational policy of the school, a swimming program is held at both Sale and Maffra Swimming Pools throughout the year. All children are expected to take part in this program. If for any reason you do not wish your child to go swimming, it would be appreciated if you could notify the school in writing of your wishes.
NEWSLETTER
You will receive a weekly newsletter. This contains all the news or items of information that you may need to know, so it is advisable to check your child's bag every Tuesday for these notices as they will be of importance to you.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
It is absolutely imperative that we are able to contact you in the event of an emergency. Please notify the school promptly of any change to your address, phone number, or person who will care for your child in an emergency. We have all such details on your file at school, but it is your responsibility to keep the school informed of any changes to these.
LUNCHES
Healthy eating habits are encouraged at school. Children eat their lunch at school under supervision. If you wish your child to come home for lunch, he/she may do so, but please notify the teacher. Each Monday children can order their lunch from a local shop and this is delivered to the school. In the colder months (Terms 2 & 3) facilities are available for the children to heat lunches suitable for heating in a pie warmer. Pies, jaffles, toasted sandwiches etc. Lunch orders are available each Friday as notified. Volunteers to assist with this are most welcome.

NAMING OF PERSONAL ITEMS
All items such as bags, lunch boxes, school uniform and items of clothing that can be removed such as shoes, parkas and coats, should be named as this will assist with the retrieval of lost items. The school has a lost property basket, so if your child loses something this can be checked. (Located in the Sick Room)
SCHOOL BAG
All children require a bag or case of suitable size to hold their lunch, home book cover, and other school work. It is suggested that a zip-up or back-pack type are the most suitable.
TOYS
Teachers can accept no responsibility for toys brought to school which become lost or broken. Such articles as knives, bows and arrows, darts or other dangerous toys are definitely banned. If children bring books from home, please ensure that they are named.
MONEY
It is suggested that any money sent to school with a child is placed in an envelope on which is written the child's name, amount of money and what it is for (e.g. book club, excursions, craft, etc.)
GLASSWARE
It is preferable that children do not bring their drinks, toys, bugs, spiders, etc to school in a glass jar or bottle. Some form of plastic or cardboard container is safer and more suitable for school.
CHILDREN LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS
Children are not permitted to leave the school at any time during the day unless permission has been granted by a teacher. If, at any time and for any reason, you need to take your child away during school hours, it is extremely important that you speak in person to the child's teacher or the Principal before you leave. If you fail to do this, much time could be wasted by teachers trying to locate the missing child. If your child does come home unaccompanied during school hours, please notify the school as soon as possible and return the child unless he/she is unwell.
SCHOOL VISITS
When visiting the school during school hours for purposes of:
- Interviewing teachers.
- Delivering messages.
- Collecting children for appointments, etc.
Parents should first, if possible see the Principal so that school and classroom organization is not interrupted, and misunderstandings can be avoided.
JEWELLERY
For obvious reasons jewellery IS NOT encouraged at school, and earrings in particular can cause concern. The cases of children having damaged ear lobes as a result of "sleepers" being caught on things is not uncommon. Consequently, we would ask that children with pierced ears wear studs if anything and not be allowed to wear any larger "dangling" varieties.
FOOTWEAR
Experience has shown that accidents occur at school when children are wearing unsuitable footwear or are in bare feet. Therefore it is suggested that care is taken in deciding the most suitable footwear to be worn at school. The school recommends regulation footwear - closed black sandals, black shoes or runners and please note that thongs are not permitted.
ART SMOCK
To lessen the amount of washing art materials from school clothes, it is recommended that each child has an art smock with them at all times. This can be either a purchased garment or, just as effective, an old shirt with shortened and/ or elasticised sleeves. This will provide plenty of protection for other school clothes.
SCHOOL POLICY
Written policy statements are being produced and reviewed constantly. These are the directions for the school's operation, and whilst under the jurisdiction of the School Council, input and constructive suggestion are welcomed from all quarters and discussion is encouraged. It is only by keeping these policies as current as possible that we can make our school relevant and responsive to the requirements of the community. However, once a policy has been given formal approval by the School Council, it is binding until formally reviewed by that body.
STUDENT WELFARE SERVICES
A limited number of specialist services are available to children upon request from teachers or parents, and after referral from the school. These include visiting teacher services for the deaf, visually impaired, gifted children, children with speech difficulties, behavioural problems and social problems, physically and intellectually handicapped, and special education. In addition to these, school medical services for diagnosis and screen testing, and dental services are available through the Guthridge Dental Clinic. Psychology and social work services are also available to appropriate cases, and paramedical treatment from physiotherapists and speech pathologists is also obtainable. In the delivery of all such specialist assistance, parents will be fully consulted.
FUNDRAISING
Over the past few years the School Council has introduced the Wurruk Country Fair. This major event held in March or April has replaced many of the minor fundraising events that were previously held throughout the year. (This event is currently in recess ) A Fundraising Committee, consisting of members of School Council, Parents, and staff is formed each year to Co-ordinate the school's fundraising activities. An annual Walkathon is also held - usually in Term 4. The Parents Club has been involved in extra fundraising events in recent times. Eg catering at local activities.
