Welcome to Wurruk Primary School
Situated almost 210 kilometres from Melbourne, Wurruk Primary School is located on the western entrance to Sale, close to the Princes Highway in Gippsland, overlooking the Thomson River. The school opened in 1883 and has a current enrolment of 36 students. Staff members include a teaching Principal, two full time teachers and two part time teachers supported by a Business Manager for 2½ days per week and a teacher aide for 8 hours per week. Parents are very supportive and there is a healthy sense of community, all of which contribute to the advantages and special qualities that exist in the life of a small rural school. The School Council is continually working towards improvements in the school facilities, grounds and curriculum provision in order to provide the best learning outcomes possible for students.
The school also services a number of families who live in central Sale and choose to transport their children to Wurruk for a variety of educational and social reasons. The community is diverse and complex ranging from professionals and farmers to itinerant workers and single parent families. This diversity should be viewed as a wonderful opportunity for this community.
Wurruk Primary School is a committed member of the Sale Rural Schools Network which enables us to participate in combined camps, sporting activities, MARC Day activities and other group days. The school is an active member of the Sale Innovations and Excellence Program with its classroom programs being consistent with other member schools.
The school sees its core purpose as providing a sound grounding in Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology and Thinking Skills, as prescribed in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards, which will allow students to develop to their maximum potential through secondary education and beyond. The organisation of classes is based on a multi-age structure that encourages and enhances individual achievement and social development. The morning sessions are devoted to literacy and numeracy while the afternoons cover all other domains.Wurruk Primary School is committed to maximizing the educational opportunities for all students with a strong commitment to staff professional development playing a vital role in achieving this.
The school motto, “Big Enough for Opportunity, Small Enough to Care” very accurately sums up the shared vision held by all staff, parents and students of Wurruk Primary School. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent, well rounded education for all students enabling them to achieve their educational potential in a supportive and stimulating environment. This includes upholding a school ethos that caters for students with a wide range of abilities, interests and potential. Each child is encouraged to achieve to the very best of his/her ability and is consequently rewarded for such behaviour. In addition, the values of ‘Supportiveness’, ‘Cohesiveness’, ‘Respect’ and ‘Enthusiasm’ are priorities at Wurruk P.S
